The Different Types of Decorative Concrete

When it comes to decorative concrete, it is not just a practical element in construction, but also an aesthetic enhancement to any structure or project. You can often find it in integral parts of a building such as floors, walls, patios and driveways.

Moreover, transforming plain concrete into decorative concrete is done by using various materials. Decorative concrete is applied during the pouring process or after the concrete is cured. There are several types of decorative concrete used in this process:

  • Stamped Concrete - Provides texture and design to your floorings. Decorative concrete experts will use huge stamping mats and moulds, which are then pressed into wet concrete to leave an imprint. Patterns or customisable designs can be added to the concrete.
  • Stained Concrete - Created by depositing colour deep into a concrete slab. Acid and water-based stains are the two types available. Acid stains have a rich and uneven stain. On the other hand, water-based stains have even and bright pigments.
  • Coloured Concrete - Achieved by applying dye to concrete floors or walls. This concrete consists of pigmented inks mixed with solvents, such as alcohol or acetone.
  • Overlays - Used for both restorative purposes and decorative reasons. Overlays are used as new layers on top of existing concrete floors. They can then be engraved or stamped with a design.
  • Polished Concrete - This is a decorative concrete technique, not to be confused with waxing, involving a chemical densifier that is applied on top of concrete floors. The chemical densifier fills in the pores of the material. Once it dries, experts will use a grinder to shave down the densifier for the preferred polish.
