Excavators for hire in Sydney

iseekplant can help people find the perfect excavator for their needs in Sydney, with a wide range of suppliers available at competitive rates:

  • Mini Excavators – We class mini excavators as anything up to 5 tonnes in tare weight. These machines are the powerhouses of residential excavation.
  • Civil-sized Excavators – Between 5 tonnes and 30 tonnes in operating weight, and commonly found on civil and heavy commercial sites in and around the Sydney metro area.
  • Heavy Duty Mine Spec Excavators – Rarely found in cities, but not impossible to find. These big boys are used in mining operations, and large mass haul or bulk earthworks jobs (which rarely occur in built up areas).

Looking for an excavator in Sydney, but overwhelmed by the selection of categories available on iseekplant? Don’t stress, click on the links below to search for different types of excavators in the Sydney area.

  • Track-Mounted Excavators – commonly known as excavators. Refine by hire types, sizes and attachments in the left-hand refinements panel.
  • Wheeled Excavators – great for operating on bitumen or concrete (inside a building or when excavating next to a paved expanse).
  • Chameleon Clamshell – are sometimes called telescopic excavators are prolifically used underground.
  • Long-Reach Excavators – have a very long and high boom and allow you to get around objects. Also heavily used in dredging operations.
  • Hi-Rail Excavators – these are mounted on rail lines and used in rail maintenance.

Wet and dry excavator hire available

The term 'Wet Hire' and ‘Self Performing Contractor’ is practically interchangeable in NSW but can mean different things depending on the site, and the head contractor running the project.

Many of our suppliers in Sydney offer both, but there are a number of suppliers listed above that only offer dry hire or wet hire exclusively. It's important to note your preference when posting a job on the platform, or when talking to a supplier about it. Being upfront about this in the request will ensure the most relevant result.

Excavator operator licensing

In New South Wales, any individual operating an excavator must hold a proof of competency or ticket and must ensure that the PCBU (person conducting business undertaking) supervising the job has viewed and approved these documents.

Excavator operator licences are divided into three classes: non-slewing (basic), slewing (intermediate), and slewing mobile crane (advanced). A non-slewing licence allows the operator to operate excavators without the ability to rotate the boom, while a slewing licence provides the operator with the ability to operate excavators with a rotating boom.

The advanced licence permits the operator to operate excavators with an elevated work platform or moveable boom. Consult Safework Australia for more details.

Excavator hire locations near to Sydney

Many of our excavator hire suppliers are based in Western Sydney due to the larger depot-sized plots of land needed to house and maintain their fleet.
