Due to our unique asset-owner heritage, our technical expertise is grounded in more than 100 years of experience.

As part of Hydro Tasmania, Australia’s leading clean energy business and largest generator of renewable energy, we are backed by more than 100 years of creating energy and maintaining power and water assets.

Our experience began in 1914, when the then Hydro-Electric Department was established. In a construction period spanning most of the twentieth century, Hydro Tasmania designed and built Tasmania’s remarkable hydro-generation system.

The results of these labours are impressive by any measure – 54 major dams, 30 hydropower stations, many of which are regarded as world firsts, and some of Australia’s largest wind farms. Equally impressive is the world-class reputation for engineering excellence, innovation and sustainability that was built along the way.

Hydro Tasmania has forged a reputation as a leader in renewable energy and water management. Since the 1990s, Entura – originally known as Hydro Tasmania Consulting – has taken that experience and knowledge and applied it to solve complex issues for similar businesses in Australia and around the world. 

Today, Entura delivers specialist power and water consulting services to governments, funding agencies, utilities, investors and project developers across the Indo-Pacific region.

Donald has over 20 years’ experience providing advice on regulatory and technical requirements for generators, substations and transmission systems. He has work for all areas of the electrical industry, including generators, equipment suppliers, customers, NSPs and market operators.

Donald specialises in the performance of power systems. His experience in generating units, governors and excitation systems provides a helpful perspective on how the physical electrical network behaves. Graduating from the University of Tasmania in 1993 with honours in Electrical Engineering, Donald’s early career included work on automated truck loading systems and bulk fluids handling in the petrol industry. In 1996 he commenced work designing and commissioning generator and power station control systems and ancillary plant, before moving into generator performance, where he defined and implemented compliance tests for generating unit controls against the electricity code.

Before taking up the position as Principal Consultant at Entura, Donald led Hydro Tasmania’s Power Systems Performance team through the business’s entry into the Australian National Electricity Market, and the connection and commissioning of Basslink.
